On the eve of the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, Astana hosted political consultations between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Kingdom of Belgium.

The Kazakh delegation was headed by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Roman Vasilenko, and the Belgian - by Director General for bilateral affairs of the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Anik Van Calster.

The interlocutors agreed that the globalization of the extremism and terrorism threat dictates a need for deeper consolidation of efforts of the entire world community and the development of an effective counteraction strategy. Joint efforts should aim, first of all, at preventing and suppressing the spread of radical ideology, to establish a mutually beneficial dialogue with all constructive forces ready to fight violent extremism. In addition, they touched upon the prospects for adopting within the UN the Comprehensive Convention on Combating International Terrorism, proposed by Kazakhstan for consideration by the world community in 2015.

Diplomats noted positive dynamics in the development of trade and economic relations. Thus, according to the results of 2016, trade turnover between the countries increased 12% compared to 2015 and amounted to 299.5 million USD.

The parties reaffirmed mutual desire of the Foreign Ministries of Kazakhstan and Belgium to intensify cooperation in all areas.
