First stone for construction of Hyundai Kazakh-Korean car production plant laid in Almaty

Stone laying ceremony was held April 21, 2019, in Almaty for the foundation of the future plant of Hyundai Trans Kazakhstan.

Minister of Industry and Infrastructure Development Roman Sklyar, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy of South Korea Sung Yun-mo, Hyundai Motor Company’s President at the Strategy Planning Division of Kong Young-Woon, President of Astana Group Nurlan Smagulov took part in the ceremony.

The plant will be built by Astana Motors in the Industrial Zone of the city of Almaty with the support of the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development and the Almaty’s Akimat.

Roman Sklyar noted that this is a strategically important step in the development of the country's engineering industry.

“The new plant will create more than 700 new jobs, the products of this enterprise will be directed both to the domestic market and to export to third countries,” said Sklyar.

The capacity of the enterprise at the first stage will be 30 thousand cars, and at the second it will be increased to 45 thousand per year. This will saturate the Kazakhstan market with high-quality and affordable Hyundai cars, as well as export them to the CIS countries. The total investment in the project will be 25 billion tenge. In addition to own funds, commercial loans will also be raised.

The plant includes welding, painting, assembly, production of plastic panels and a quality control department. The company will be equipped with the latest technological equipment manufactured in South Korea and Japan. The entire Hyundai lineup will be assembled at the plant. At the first stage, the production of a full cycle of Accent models will be launched, and later it is planned to launch a line for the production of Creta models.

Localization of the assembly will reach 50% thanks to cooperation and industrial cooperation with the countries of the EAEU. In the future, it is planned to build a plant for the production of automotive components, which will increase the level of localization in Kazakhstan.

It is planned to build production workshops until the end of 2019, and in 2020 the first car will come off the assembly line of the plant.

Akim of Almaty Bauyrzhan Baibek noted that 25 hectares of land with all the necessary infrastructure were allocated for the construction of the plant. In total, 39 projects worth 144 billion tenge are being implemented in the industrial zone of the Alatau district. Five factories with participation of Japanese, German, Chinese and Russian capital were opened. In 2019 it is planned to launch another four enterprises with an investment volume of about 367 billion tenge, including the large Kazakhstan-Chinese steel pipe factory Asia Steel Pipe.
